TAKING private marimba lessons AT THE RIDGEWOOD CONSERVATORY

As one of the earliest melodic instruments, the marimba has a lower range and a warmer, deeper and more resonant timbre than a xylophone. An important member of the Percussion family, it is often played as a solo instrument, or in ensembles such as orchestras, marching bands, percussion ensembles, brass and concert bands. Marimba is most commonly played in classical music or jazz, but can sometimes be heard in Latin, pop and rock music as well.

While learning a few simple songs, beginner marimba students learn the different grips for the mallets, the major scales, how to read music, and basic technique.

Our marimba instructors are highly trained and experienced professional percussionists who are dedicated to helping their students achieve success. They take care to ensure that they tailor lessons to students’ skill level and help students build confidence.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF BEGINNER MARIMBA LESSONS FOR CHILDREN, teens and adults!

There are many benefits in learning to play the marimba. Similar to learning the other percussion instruments, marimba lessons provide a strong foundation in building a constant sense of rhythm and creating dynamics. Studying the marimba has been shown to increase cognitive abilities, improve hand-eye coordination and enhance memory. The pattern on a marimba is the same as on a piano, with the white keys on the bottom and the black keys (sharps and flats) elevated above, enabling those with a background in piano to learn to read musical notation for the marimba more easily. Offered as one-on-one private instruction, marimba lessons help our youngest students realize a great sense of accomplishment as they learn and grow. As our marimba players continue to study, they develop the strength, dexterity and independence of hands necessary to play their instrument. As a bonus benefit, many of the skills and techniques learned in playing marimba can be translated to learning other percussion instruments such as the the drums, xylophone and timpani as well as glockenspiel, chimes and bells.

Advanced MARIMBA lessons for students of all ages!

Our advanced students explore many different mallet techniques and using four mallets instead of two. They also focus on learning dynamics and complex rhythms, while mastering more complicated pieces and/or new genres to add to their repertoire. Our instructors help our more advanced marimba students in furthering their studies in theory and musicianship, preparing for an audition or performance, playing within a group, soloing, and improvisation.
