TAKING private double bass lessons AT THE RIDGEWOOD CONSERVATORY

Substantially larger in size than the violin, viola or cello, the double bass is the lowest-pitched member of the String family (a full octave lower than even the cello!), offering a deeper, richer sound. Sometimes called the string bass or contrabass, the double bass is an essential member of most orchestras and is featured in concertos, solo and chamber music. The bass is also used in a range of other genres, such as jazz, blues or rock (where it might be called the upright bass, standup bass or acoustic bass to distinguish it from the electric bass), as well as in country, bluegrass, and folk music (where it’s often referred to as the bass fiddle, bass violin or doghouse bass).

The versatility of the double bass enables students to learn a variety of music genres. Beginning double bass players learn the fundamentals of playing music such as playing basic scales and reading music, and proper techniques for finger positioning and bowing while learning to play simple songs. As our student-bassists continue to grow in skill, they are exposed to a broad range of musical literature.

Our double bass instructors offer one-on-one lessons custom-tailored to focus on the musical style(s) which most appeals to the student. Highly trained performers with outstanding professional and educational credentials, our experienced instructors help our bass students grow in their musicianship.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF BEGINNER double bass LESSONS FOR CHILDREN, teens and adults!

Our beginner lessons help students develop the dexterity and coordination skills necessary to playing the double bass. Our younger double bass students often see their academic performance improve in mathematics, logical reasoning, and creative thinking. In addition to learning the basics of playing the bass, our students learn the fundamentals of sight reading, technique, ear training and music theory.

A wonderfully dynamic and versatile instrument, the double bass offers students of all ages a strong foundation for understanding and appreciating all genres of music. In fact, professional bassists are often in demand because the bass is an integral part of so many different kinds of musical styles.

As our bass students continue to study, they develop the dexterity necessary to finger the proper notes as they pluck or bow the corresponding strings. As an added benefit, the techniques learned in playing upright bass are easily translated to learning other string instruments such as the violin, viola and cello!

Advanced DOUBLE BASS lessons for students of all ages!

The double bass is played either with a bow (arco) or by plucking the strings (pizzicato), depending upon the musical style. Advanced classical bass students learn all of the different bow articulations used by other string musicians, including détaché, legato, martelé, staccato, spiccato, and sforzato, while developing vibrato. More advanced jazz and country music players will often devote more time to mastering difficult pizzicato basslines. Our instructors also help prepare their students for auditions and performances, playing within a group or solo, and bolster understanding of music theory.
