TAKING private viola lessons AT THE RIDGEWOOD CONSERVATORY

Noticeably larger than a violin, the viola’s size results in a lower, mellower and deeper sound which many string players find appealing. The viola offers increased versatility and depth, and can often be heard playing harmonic accompaniments to the violin’s melody throughout a variety of music genres.

In only a few lessons, our beginning viola students learn the proper techniques for positioning and bowing, all while having fun learning to play simple songs! Violinists transitioning to the viola learn new tuning and fingering to address the lower range of the instrument. As our student-violists continue to grow in skill, they are exposed to a broad range of popular and classical literature.

Our viola instructors offer one-on-one lessons individually tailored to help their students build confidence and achieve success. Virtuosi performers with outstanding professional and educational credentials, our experienced instructors help student-violists grow in their musicianship.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF BEGINNER VIOLA LESSONS FOR CHILDREN, teens and adults!

Even as beginners, students who take viola lessons experience many different benefits. They often see their academic performance improve, especially in mathematics, logical reasoning, and creative thinking. Playing the viola offers students of all ages a wonderful way to express their emotions and alleviate stress. It also allows students to learn the basic fundamentals of music such as reading music, ear training, rhythm, and basic scales.

Studying viola provides a strong foundation for understanding and appreciating all genres of music. The viola is often an integral part of ensembles, and viola players are typically in high demand in high school, college and professional performances.

As our violists continue to study, they develop the dexterity necessary to finger the proper notes as they pluck or bow the corresponding strings. As a bonus benefit, the bowing techniques learned in playing viola are easily translated to learning other string instruments such as the violin, cello and double bass!
