SUZUKI-plus! VIOLIN PROGRAM
We all know that young children learn to speak by being continually exposed to their native language. The Suzuki philosophy goes one step further in extending that philosophy to music. Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s theory was that, with the right environment, teachers and supportive parents, every child can succeed in learning music.
Young musicians learn to play the violin through listening, imitation and repetition, as well as learning to read music, in The Ridgewood Conservatory’s unique approach to the Suzuki method. In the Suzuki-plus! Violin Program, parents attend both weekly private lessons and group classes with their child, and practice the violin with them at home every day, to provide loving encouragement and support.
Beyond creating future musicians, Dr. Suzuki’s goal was to nurture loving human beings and help develop each child’s character through the study of music. Our Suzuki program was designed to create the best environment to foster your child’s talents, self-expression and love of music.

The Mother Tongue Approach
More than fifty years ago, Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki noticed that children learn how to speak their native language with ease – first by listening, then by imitating and repeating what they’ve heard. He applied that basic principle of language development to the learning of music, and called his method “the mother-tongue approach.” Dr. Suzuki built his teaching pedagogy around this concept, defining small, easily managed steps to ensure that young students learn to create a beautiful sound, maintain good posture and master the correct fundamental skills.
The Parent, Teacher and Child Triangle
This Suzuki approach to early musicianship builds a strong relationship between the teacher, the student and the parent. Just like when your child learned to talk, you will play a vital role in his or her musical learning. Attending both private lessons and group classes will enable you to help your child practice at home. Our Suzuki-plus! teachers have undertaken rigorous training in the Suzuki method. In addition to providing the highest level of violin instruction, they will give you the information, skills and guidance you need to nuture, develop and strengthen your child’s love of music.
Combining Private Lessons with Group Classes
The combination of private lessons and group classes is at the heart of Dr. Suzuki’s philosophy. In private lessons, children develop an in-depth understanding of the instrument and the music. In the group classes, they will share their experiences with other children in a fun and non-competitive environment, building a sense of musical comradery and motivating them to practice the violin at home.
Listening, Repetition and Encouragement
Children learn to speak after hearing words spoken hundreds of times by others. Similarly, listening to music every day is stressed in our program. (It’s especially helpful to listen to pieces in the Suzuki repertoire so your child knows them immediately.) Constant repetition is essential in learning to play an instrument. In the Suzuki method, children do not learn a word or piece of music and then discard it. They add it to their vocabulary or repertoire, gradually using it in new and more sophisticated ways. Your child’s effort to learn an instrument should always be met with sincere praise and encouragement. Children are also encouraged to support each other’s efforts, fostering an attitude of generosity and cooperation.
What's included
The Suzuki-plus! Violin Program includes both weekly private lessons and group classes….
Group violin classes for ages 4-5 and ages 6-7 run approximately 30 minutes long.
Private violin instruction will be scheduled for weekday afternoons and early evenings. Students ages 4 – 5 take 30-minute lessons, while students ages 6-7 take 45-minute lessons each week.
