Meet our new violin/viola teacher, Susan Heerema!
Susan Heerema has been performing as violin soloist since age 9.
Over the years, she has played internationally under the baton of Rostropovich, Rampal, and Menuhin in France; toured Norway, Iceland and Scotland; performed with the Spoleto and Sarasota Opera Festivals, and with every major Baroque festival in the United States.
Having held numerous leadership positions as Concertmaster since the age of 11, Susan now sits Concertmaster for Light Opera of NJ, MidAtlantic Opera Orchestra, Long Island Concert Orchestra, and Society of Musical Arts, is the former concertmaster of the Berkshire Opera Company and is often found as the guest soloist. She has been both choral and orchestral director and on orchestral tours like Concertmaster for the Phantom of the Opera national tour, and has performed all the various opera repertoire with conductors Joel Revzen, Anton Coppola, Kathy Kelly, and Alfredo Silipigni. Susan has recorded on labels for artists such as Vanessa Williams, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennet and Brian Stokes Mitchell. She has also performed on various TV shows including soap operas, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien with celebrities such as U2, Doc Severnson, Matchbox Twenty VH1, and Blackstreet MTV Unplugged. She continues to perform in all these mediums of both small and large ensembles including solo performances of classical, pop, rock, and jazz.
Currently on the music faculties at Seton Hall University and Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School, Susan has previously taught violin and viola in schools in Westchester NY and in Bergenfield, Berkeley Heights, Short Hills and Ridgewood NJ. Susan graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School of Music, where she studied with Dorothy DeLay, Hyo Kang, and Richard Simon. We are so delighted that Susan has joined our String faculty here at The Ridgewood Conservatory, teaching both violin and viola students of all ages and levels.
