TAKING private euphonium lessons AT THE RIDGEWOOD CONSERVATORY

The euphonium is a low-brass instrument similar to the baritone horn. It’s softer, gentler tone is often described as dark, rich, warm and velvety, making it the brass instrument often used for the main melody or countermelody. Most commonly played in concert bands, orchestras and military bands, it is occasionally heard in jazz and in brass chamber groups.

Beginner euphonium students learn the basics of the instrument, which include developing the embouchure, proper posture, accurate positioning and correct breathing techniques, as well as learning scales and correct fingering … all while having fun learning to play easy songs!

Dedicated to helping their students achieve success, our euphonium instructors are highly trained virtuosi performers and experienced, caring teachers. They not only guide their student-euphoniumists in learning the fundamentals, they provide a supportive environment to enable their students to grow as musicians.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF BEGINNER euphonium LESSONS FOR CHILDREN, teens and adults!

There are a number of benefits to learning to play the euphonium. Our beginner euphonium lessons help students develop greater lung capacity and increase technical dexterity. Playing the euphonium has also been shown to improve memory, posture and coordination. Many of our students notice that, through musical enrichment, they are more creative. They often report that they have greater academic success, particularly in mathematics. After learning the basics of playing the euphonium, our students learn the fundamentals of sight reading, technique, ear training and music theory.

The euphonium is a great instrument for a beginner to learn, as it is slightly easier than a tuba or trombone. And, as there is usually a demand for low brass players in a concert or school band, students have the opportunity to perform often and progress quickly. Euphoniums can also play a wide range of music, ranging from classical to jazz to contemporary, allowing our students to explore a variety of musical styles. As an added benefit, the techniques learned in playing euphonium are easily translated to learning other brass instruments such as the baritone horn, trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, french horn and tuba.

Advanced euphonium lessons for students of all ages!

Our more advanced euphonium students focus on improving buzzing, tone and air flow, lip slurs, and playing by ear, as well as developing high range flexibility and increased tonguing and finger coordination. They may continue to explore the range of literature available for euphonium in different genres. Our instructors also help prepare their students for auditions and performances, playing within a group or solo, and bolster understanding of music theory.
